FISHING REPORT

Back to news and reports listing

09/01/08 - The season in Tierra del Fuego is just beginning but big fish are being caught already

After a very wet December the Rio Grande needed a chance to fine down, which it has now done, with the result being very clear water at an excellent height. The level has been dropping this week, with water temperatures ranging between 48F and 61F; however, the weekly fluctuations are so great at present, that this is almost irrelevant.

Despite these relatively warm temperatures the most effective lines have been Teeny 300 and 400 lines with big flies working best. The most popular flies have been Olive and Black Rubber B**gers, Egg Sucking Leeches, Green Machines and B*tch Creek Nymphs. Black Leeches have also been working very well in the evening sessions.

For the most part it is the guides test fishing as they work out how the river bed has changed during the winter months, but we have had reports of one rod landing 34 beautifully fresh fish in just a couple days of fishing with the biggest being 21lbs.

We look forward to the start of the season proper and no doubt many tales of monsters landed and lost. With one of the best fishing lodges we have found and fishing that is simply staggering, this is truly a superb destination.

There are very few rods available for the remainder of the season. Please contact Charlie White or Sarah Chamberlain for further details.
