10/01/2008 - HN51 Avian Influenza outbreak in Dorset
Under EU community law, there will be a temporary but immediate cessation of shooting in an area of Dorset hit by avian influenza today. The shooting of wild birds should cease in the protection and surveillance zones surrounding the outbreak at Abbotsbury Swannery. Deer stalking and pest control using sound moderators are not affected because the aim is to restrict practices that may disperse wildlife in an affected area. Hours after the outbreak was confirmed, Defra have said this is a 'period of uncertainty' whilst the facts are uncovered but there might be the possibility of licences in certain situations.
None of the Roxtons shoots are located within the affected area, however should anything change we will of course notify all relevant persons immediately.
