06/02/08 - TDF - A fantastic week on the Rio Grande with many fish over 20lbs

Although the fishing season in Tierra del Fuego opens in November, it is not until January when it really starts to take off and just a few weeks into the peak season we have already seen some superb fish.

The rain has arrived, raising the river and the fish are on the move. The weather has been varied over last couple of weeks but with steady easterly winds, making casting a little more challenging than normal. The water temperature has ranged from 49 to 57 degrees F during the day. With the rise in water a mixture of lines have been used, but 15 foot sink tips are working best.

The most successful flies this week have been the EMB Rubber Legs, B*tch Creeks, Olive & Black Woolly B's, Green Machines and leeches.

With the weather men predicting rain for the end of this week, the water levels are likely to rise further and we therefore advise to take a range of lines to cope with any situation as conditions can change very rapidly.

There have been some excellent fish landed this week with around 15 trout in the 20+lbs region and many more over the 15lbs mark. The biggest at Estancia was a 25.5lber caught by Michael Johnston and a 26lber was landed at La Villa by Robert Stephenson.

On his first ever fly fishing trip, the first fish landed by Nils Tcheyan weighed 16lbs, a fantastic fish for an inaugural outing.

There are very few spaces left for the rest of the season but if you are interested in experiencing this fabulous fishing please contact Charlie White or Sarah Chamberlain on +44 1488 689 701 for further details.
