THE SEASON BEGINS IN ICELAND

fishing in iceland

07/07/08 - Iceland - the season begins and fish are already being caught.

After a very heavy fall of snow in spring it appeared as though high water may be a problem in Iceland but after a very warm and hot June, the rivers are actually quite low.

This does not appear to have affected the fishing and if anything, it has started very well and in some rivers earlier than we would generally expect.

The Midfjardara opened with 45 fish being taken on the first 3 days which is as good a start as they have had for many years. The Blanda has also had a very productive start to the season and as this river tends to be the bell weather for a lot of north coast rivers, it bodes well for the rest of the year.

The Rangas are less affected by water levels as, being fed by glaciers, they tend to have a more stable water flow. However, they are following the trend of the other rivers by fishing very well earlier than usual. Rods have already taken a good number of fish on both the East and the West Ranga and they have also reported some very good fish being caught with the largest so far being around 19lbs.

The main part of the season has yet to begin on most of the rivers but if the start indicates anything we should be in for a good year. For reports and latest conditions on individual rivers please do not hesitate to contact Louise Mackenny or Charlie White.
