07/07/08 - Cuba - Louise Mackenny lands her first Grand Slam in Cayo Largo

Louise Mackenny has just returned from Cayo Largo in Cuba where she achieved the Holy Grail of saltwater fishing by landing a bonefish, a tarpon and a permit in the same day.

Cayo Largo has long been known as an excellent fishery but it is only recently that we felt comfortable offering it as it is now under the new management of Avalon who we have worked with for years. Avalon has a superb history of running Cuban destinations and with their enthusiasm and expertise we believe that this is a very exciting new development.

The fishing is top class with miles and miles of wadeable flats offering endless fishing opportunities. Louise reported seeing a huge amount of good sized bones, numerous tarpon (the biggest being around 90lbs) and having many really good chances at the elusive permit. On her third morning all of these came together to produce quite a memorable day!

The accommodation is currently in the well-established hotel but Avalon have plans to enhance the dedicated fishing lodge which will only add to the experience.

For those of you who want the unique opportunity to catch a grand slam in the same place as where a non-fishing partner can be equally happy then we would strongly recommend Cayo Largo as a destination to consider. This is such a new destination that we have not yet loaded it onto our website but we will very shortly and in the meantime please contact Louise Mackenny for further details.
