30/01/2007 - The Pinnacle of Sea Trout Fishing
Although the fishing season in Tierra Del Fuego opens in November, it is only January when it really starts to take off and with just a few weeks of the peak season gone we have already seen some superb fish.
They have had varied weather this week but with constant Easterly winds making casting a little more challenging than normal. The water temperature has ranged from 50 to 56 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. With the water falling they have been using a mixture of intermediate and floating lines.
The most successful flies this week have been the Chernobyl Prince, EMB Rubber Legs, Yuk Bugs, Bitch Creeks and Prince Nymphs. In the late afternoon the Collie Dog has been the most effective and it is this fact that perhaps best illustrates the height of the water as it is rare to get the fish to the surface in January.
However, with the weather men predicting rain for next week, the water levels are likely to rise and we therefore we advise still to take a range of lines to cope with any situation as conditions can change very rapidly.
There have been some excellent fish landed this week with many over 15lbs and on average, fishermen were landing three to four fish each per day with many more encounters that did not necessarily convert to fish at the net. On his first trip to Tierra del Fuego, Roger Henderson landed a 20 pounder, a fantastic fish for your first time on the river.
In the previous week, Alf Bond led his highly experienced team to a very successful week and landed the best fish of the week, a superb 26lb male.
