16/01/2007 - The Tierra Del Fuego season starts with a cracking 24lb fish

After what seemed an endless wait, the season in Rio Grande has got underway and already we have been reminded as to why we look forward to it so much.

The weather has been relatively stable but there have been some very windy days which is to be expected in Tierra del Fuego. The water temperature has ranged from 48 to 56 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. This past week has seen the river drop and is at present very clear with plenty of fish in the pools.

Fish caught during the week averaged around 13lbs with most fishermen landing three to four fish each per day but as ever, many more were lost. The largest caught this week was a superb 24lb fish.

As a result of the lowish water and its clarity, the lines most used at present are 200 grain teeny lines and 15ft sink tips on intermediate lines. However, experience tells us that it only takes a day or two of rain in the Andes to change the water levels and our advice is still to take a range of lines to cope with any situation as conditions can change very quickly.

The most effective flies have been the old favourites such as EMB Rubber Legs, Yuk Bugs, Gridle Bugs, Olive & Black Rubber Legged Woolly B's and Prince Nymphs in relatively small sizes such as 8 to 10.

The start of the season is always an exciting time and we are confident that we can expect an excellent couple of months ahead.
