Bonefishing in the Bahamas

Fishing in the Bahamas with Roxtons

There are nearly 1,000 square miles of flats surrounding Andros Island, and it is a dream come true for anglers in pursuit of trophy bonefish.

Since the early 1990's, Bair's Lodge has produced some of the finest saltwater fishing that Andros has to offer. Ideally located in a prime position to access some of the most remote saltwater flats, Bair's sits between Sought Bight and Curley Cut Cays; world renowned hot spots for sight casting to big bonefish.

The Southern Cays and creeks are some of the most under-fished on the Island. Names like Grassy Creek, Deep Creek, Little Creek, the Water Cays and Curley Cut Cays are intrinsically linked to sight fishing for some of the world's largest bonefish.

These wadeable, protected flats are home to resident populations of bonefish and also tarpon as well as the occasional permit.

New 18 foot Dolphin Super Skiffs comprise the fishing fleet, operated by first class fishing guides whose local knowledge and expertise is instrumental to the success of your fishing day. They are your eyes on the flats when spotting wary bonefish and their enthusiasm is both infectious and invaluable.

Bair's Lodge is setting the benchmark as regards the quality of the fishing in The Bahamas, the professionalism of its guides, delicious fresh food and the extent of its hospitality and accommodation.

The lodge accommodates a maximum of eight guests in spacious and comfortable air-conditioned guest rooms, each with private bathrooms.

Meals comprise beautifully prepared Bahamian specialities of fresh seafood, fried or frittered conch and fresh bread baked daily. A fully stocked bar serves the dining room and there is a charming oceanside deck on which to relax after a successful day on the flats.

There is also a fly tackle shop fully equipped with flies, rods, reels, lines and a small selection of clothing.

Rod and Reel
The ideal rod for bonefishing in The Bahamas is a 9ft 8 weight with a robust reel constructed from a non-corrosive metal such as aluminium with good smooth drag control. The reel should hold at least 150 yards of backing. You should ensure that you have a spare rod in case of breakage as well as a spare reel and spools in case of accidents.

Lines
High visibility weight forward lines compensate for the ever-present trade winds and can be seen in the air or on the water in bright light. Take an extra fly line just in case the first suffers damage.

Nylon
Leaders should be 9 to 12ft, tapered clear nylon with tippet between 10 and 15 lbs. Ensure that you carry plenty with you. Most tackle stores stock excellent pre-tied bonefish leaders.

Flies
Tan and pink Fly patterns work best, below is a list of some of the flies we reccomend.

  • Gotchas
  • Clousers
  • Crab patterns
  • Gregs flat's fly
  • Snapping shrimps

The list is endless and will depend to a large extent on the kind of flat you are fishing, it's background colour and depth.

Other non-fishing activities include snorkelling, bird watching, trips to the Androsia fabric factory, Island hopping by private charter from Congo Town.
