Fishing in Ireland with Roxtons
The Cork Blackwater is one of Ireland's finest salmon rivers, stretching over 90 miles from its source in Kerry to the sea at Youghal. Due to the size of its catchment area the Blackwater maintains a good flow of water all season, so fishing is possible in a wide range of weather conditions.
Ballyvolane has over six miles of privately-managed salmon fishing on the renowned River Blackwater, with a wide variety of spring and summer beats to keep anglers entertained at most times of year.
Not only are the beats particularly productive but they are also extremely scenic. A fishing holiday here can be a beautiful experience in more ways than one.
Ballyvolane House and salmon fishery is perfect for small groups or couples and those wishing to combine a holiday with some wonderful fly fishing.
Ballyvolane has over six miles of privately-managed salmon fishing on the renowned River Blackwater, with a wide variety of spring and summer beats. The beats are all varied with splendid pools and runs, which the Blackwater is famous for. Each beat is well suited to two or three rods per day and there is ample water to keep all rods busy during the day.
The season for salmon opens on 1st February and continues until 30th September. Due to the size of its catchment area the Blackwater maintains a good flow so that fishing is possible in a wide range of weather conditions.
Ballyvolane has one estate ghillie that will need to be pre booked if you would like his services for either your entire stay or just one or two days.
Ballyvolane House was originally built in 1728 and later remodelled in the Italianate style. It offers guests superior accommodation in the Blackwater Valley. Surrounded by mature woodland, extensive gardens, parkland and trout lakes, the house has a charming, peaceful atmosphere.
The bedrooms have the loveliest, most peaceful garden views and are furnished with an assortment of wing chairs, alabaster lamps and comfortable sofas. Delicious food is a high point at Ballyvolane.
County Cork is well known for its artisan food producers and during the growing season, most of the fruit and vegetables come from Ballyvolane's walled garden.
Dinning is mostly undertaken in a dinner party style in the main room, but separate tables can be organised if you wish to dine as part of your group.
Rod
A double handed rod 14-15ft, rated to 10-12 weight is perfect for fishing on the Blackwater.
Lines
In the early part of the season from May to early July you might need a sinking or intermediate line. For the rest of the season a floating line and sink tip is mostly used. However it is always a good idea to have a selection of fly lines to give you more options and match the conditions at the time.
Flies
This is a list of the most popular flies from the last few seasons and is by no means definitive, it is always a good idea to bring with you your own favourites as well and try them on the River Blackwater salmon:
- Irish Black Shrimp
- Irish Red Shrimp
- Cascade
- Ally's Shrimp
- Gary Dog
- Collie Dog and Sunray Shadow (for low water).
Other Items
In spite of the relatively mild climate, you should bring warm clothing and, most importantly, quality rainwear and a windcheater. Chest waders and wading shoes are essential on the Blackwater.
- Life jacket
- Wading stick
- Wader repair kit
- Polarised sunglasses
- Forceps/clippers
- Tape measure
- Leader
- Waterproof bag for camera etc
- Day bag
