Fishing in Ireland with Roxtons
The River Erriff is renowned as a salmon fishery, with regular guests returning year after year to experience the wonderful fishing in these stunning surroundings.
The fishery is comprised of the Erriff River and the two lakes of Tawnyard and Derrintin. The Erriff is a spate river, it is characterised by lively streams and deep fish-holding pools. It has 8 miles of prime angling water, divided into 9 beats, which are rotated amongst anglers on a daily basis.
Fishing is uncrowded with only two rods on most beats, and a maximum of 3 on the remainder.
The Erriff's banks are mostly open and very well cared for with cut paths and stiles over fences. There are a few sheltered places in the lower reaches where spey casting might be useful. Late June and July are peak months but August can be as good as any, especially if there has been rain.
The Erriff is a large river and requires the use of a double handed rod to cover the water properly when the river is in spate. All of the nine beats have some wonderful water for the fly fisherman with glorious pools that hold the salmon fresh from the sea.
Fishing is best after rain, but small flies can work well in low water, especially if there is a good wind blowing. Many anglers bring both double handed rods (for high water) and single handed rods.
The main run of salmon into the Erriff is from the middle of June until the middle of August, with a fine autumn run in September. The river has a lovely recently refurbished lodge that caters for fishermen and accompanying guests.
As ghillies are not included we are able to arrange for you to be guided by Russell Whiteman who we have developed a relationship with over many years. Russell knows the Erriff intimately and his passion and enthusiasm ensure that you will get the most out of your trip.
Aasleagh is one of the most beautifully situated fishing lodges in Ireland. The house is set in 36 acres of mature woodlands with magnificent views over Killary Harbour and surrounded by beautiful mountains. A short walk through the grounds brings you to the famous Aasleagh Falls, an internationally famous waterfall on the river, where silver salmon can be seen leaping as they make their way upstream.
This large Victorian country house has recently been completely refurbished and now plays host to anglers and other guests from all over the world. The bedrooms and bathrooms are all large and very comfortable with queen sized beds throughout and all the bathrooms have large power showers.
Aasleagh Lodge is noted for its use of fresh local seafood and the communal dining arrangements make for a great atmosphere. The lodge is open from May to September.
Two self-catering cottages are also available for rental if required.
Rod
A double handed rod 14-15ft, rated to 10-12 weight is perfect for fishing on the Eriff when in spate and a 9ft 8 weight for times of low water.
Lines
In the early part of the season from June to early July you might need a sinking line. For the rest of the season a floating line and sink tip is mostly used. However it is always a good idea to have a selection of fly lines to give you more options and match the conditions at the time.
Flies
This is a list of the most popular flies from the last few seasons and is by no means definitive, it is always a good idea to bring with you your own favourites as well.
