Fishing in Ireland with Roxtons

Fishing in Ireland can be a magical experience but it is vital to be on the right river at the right time. Working with a private guide ensures that even if the river you are on at the time is not fishing well you have the flexibility to move based on your guides extensive knowledge and contacts.

We work exclusivley with Russell Whiteman who is incredibly knowledgeable on a huge variety of Irish fishing and his passion and enthusiasm ensures that you will get the most out of your trip.

Over the past few years we have developed an exclusive arrangement with one of Ireland’s top names in fishing, Russell Whiteman. Our aim has been to deliver tailor made itineraries and to provide a fully guided, personalised service that will fulfil every requirement and exceed expectations. Working alongside Russell we can organise fishing for both salmon and trout on a number of excellent rivers and loughs from January to October, some on an exclusive basis ensuring complete privacy.

Russell has fished and guided on the best Irish waters for decades. He is a recognised and very well respected expert who has the uncanny ability to find fish at all stages of the season. His vast experience and enormous network of relationships also affords him access to the finest rivers and loughs in Ireland.

Those fishing for trout will want to head to the famed Irish loughs of Mask, Sheelin, Corrib and Caragh. These waters can be very successful throughout the season although it is no surprise that the most popular time is during the huge mayfly hatches in May and June. We are also able to arrange fishing on the Suir, a clear river with excellent numbers of wild brown trout which also has a very good run of fresh salmon in September.

For the those wishing to target salmon we have a choice of rivers sweeping the length and breadth of Ireland. A popular venue is Castleconnell on the River Shannon near Limerick in the south west. The Shannon is a stunning stretch of water, similar in appearance to a Scottish highland river and carrying an excellent run of grilse. The beats on the Shannon also benefit from a hydro scheme, ensuring that the water level is always stable and that the fishing is less affected by weather conditions such as floods or drought.

The west coast is home to a host of rivers all excellent for salmon, including the famous Carragh and Erriff. We often arrange a week of mixed fishing on one or two rivers, giving rods excellent variety and the chance to see more of this enchanting country.

There is a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets and tastes from castles and stately homes to country house hotels and intimate guesthouses. With such a choice of fishing available we are ideally placed to offer the finest fishing throughout the season, often with arrangements in place to fish waters which have previously been difficult to access.

Clients are met at the airport in Ireland and are transferred to their accommodation or to the river by their guide who will escort them throughout their stay.

Rods
A double handed rod from 15’ – 13’ for a 9-10 weight line for the salmon fishing and a single handed 7-8 weight rod is recommended for sea trout fishing.

Reels, lines and leaders
A sturdy reel with a good drag system and at least 100m of backing is required for fishing in Ireland. A floating line and a sink tip will be fine for most conditions though you should carry a sinking line if fishing at the beginning or the end of the season. We have found the Rio Windcutters with interchangeable tips to be very useful. Either 12lb or 15lb leader will be adequate for Salmon or sea-trout.

Flies
Russell Whiteman has lots of flies, but an assortment of Irish Shrimp patters in sizes 6-10 is essential and will fish well in the summer months.

Wading
Chest waders are the most useful and they should be felt soled or studded for extra grip. Either neoprene or Gore-Tex waders are best and, on some rivers, a wading stick would be useful.
