Fishing in Argentina with Roxtons

The Rio Grande is arguably the finest fishing destination in the world in terms of reliability and the remarkable average size of fish.

With one of the most comfortable fishing lodges yet built, Estancia Maria Behety should be a fishery at the top of every fisherman's wish list.

There are some 100 pools within this stretch and the finest of them can be found roughly in the centre of 35 miles within the Estancia Maria Behety. This historic ranch once encompassed the majority of the entire island of Tierra del Fuego and its fences still surround hundreds of thousands of acres. Ensuring a very private experience for everyone, fishing guests from Estancia Maria Behety and the neighbouring lodges use alternate sections of the river each day.

Each two anglers are assigned a guide and vehicle. No more than twelve anglers will fish the premier pools of the lower and middle Rio Grande from the Estancia Maria Behety. These pools fill with chrome bright, sea-lice covered sea trout with each high tide, twice a day. These pools are absolutely perfect for anglers that enjoy fishing double handed rods with the best of the fishing usually in the morning, late afternoon and evening until dusk.

There are six guides on the river, all of whom are superb and have excellent grasp of English.

Anglers at Estancia Maria Behety rotate through the premier pools of the lower and middle beats of the river, which have historically been the most prolific. These are all found within the massive border of the estancia just a stones throw away from the lodge.

This historic ranch once encompassed the majority of the entire island of Tierra del Fuego and its fences still surround hundreds of thousands of acres.

At Estancia Maria Behety you will enjoy luxurious accommodation, excellent meals, the finest Argentine wines and one of the best fly fishing experiences in the world.

There are eight rooms for the twelve rods, all rooms are en suite and there is a professional manager to help with everything in the lodge as well a top class chef.

In addition to all of that, at Estancia Maria Behety there is a magnificent sitting room with a roaring log fire, dining room and a bar that holds some of the 20,000 bottles of wine from La Villa de Estancia Maria Behety's wine cellar.

Rods
It is best to bring at least two rods to allow for variety and also as insurance in case of breakages. Traditionally, single handed 9ft to 10ft 8 weight to 10 weight rods have been used but double handed 12 - 14 ft rods have proved increasingly successful in the windy conditions and these are now the rods that we would recommend unless you feel extremely comfortable with a single handed rod. Reels should be sturdy and have a good braking system with at least 100m of backing.

Lines
It is best to carry an entire range of lines for the changeable conditions: floating, intermediate, Wet Cell III (sinking) and also a faster sinking line such as a Teeny 200, 300 or even 400. With the strong winds a shooting head (10 - 11m) or weight forward taper lines can be useful. We find that the Rio Wind cutter series with its interchangeable tips are excellent.

Nylon
12 - 15 pounds is fine.

Flies
Good flies to have at hand in Tierra del Fuego include:

From London Heathrow you fly direct to Buenos Aires on British Airways.

Due to the continued possibility of last minute changes to the Buenos Aires - Rio Grande/Ushuaia flight schedule we strongly recommend clients leave England on the Thursday and arrive the Friday before their confirmed week's fishing. This will allow clients a full day of rest in Buenos Aires before the scheduled Aerolineas flight to Rio Grande on Saturday.

On the Saturday morning you fly with Aerolineas from Buenos Aires to Rio Grande or Ushuaia where you will be met by the lodge staff and transferred to Estancia Maria Behety.
