Fishing in Canada with Roxtons

Spey Lodge is run to fanatical perfection, offering customised fishing packages and comfortable accommodation in six twin guest rooms.

One major advantage of Spey Lodge is that the guides will take you to remote rivers which really show off the beauty of British Columbia and also means that you hopefully will not see another living soul.

With friendly and helpful staff on the river and in the camp the people of Spey Lodge will make sure that your stay is the best fishing holiday you will ever have.

The fishing is on the Skeena and its many oceanic tributaries of the north Pacific with excellent Pacific salmon, steelhead and trout waters in the coastal mountain valleys.

As the name suggests, double handed rods are the most popular, fished with floating or sink-tip lines and wet or skated dry flies.

Although some anglers do opt for nine foot, eight weight rods it is not rare to find yourself outgunned with king salmon often approaching 30lbs and the steelhead close behind at 20lbs, making even a fifteen foot ten weight seem like a twig. However, rods and spey casting tuition are included should you find yourself under-armed at any stage.

With steelhead in the rivers from mid March and rainbows along with all five Pacific salmon in the waters from May until close-out in late November, Spey Lodge offers only the finest early season fishing adventures. As a combined run it can also be said that these Pacific salmon constitute the largest run of freshwater, wild fish on the planet.

Spey Lodge offers six comfortable, twin occupancy rooms all with private bathrooms. Generally these rooms are single occupancy unless requested otherwise.

There is also a large lounge, a dining room, and a number of other amenities.

Although Spey Lodge has the capability to accommodate 12 anglers at a time, they usually cater to small groups, couples, and even single anglers.

Rods
As the name suggests a double handed 9-10weight 15ft rod is best for Spey Lodge. The king salmon run to over 30lbs here and fishing with a smaller rod you can be simply overwhelmed by their power.

Lines
Floating lines with interchangeable tips are best. Floating lines and medium weighted 10ft sink tips are advised.

Nylon / Leader
You should take 15-25lb tippets for behind your sink tip lines and 10-15ft tapered leaders with 8lb tippet for floating lines. Always use clear leaders as the brown coloured material can look like rope in the clear Canadian waters.

Flies
Most traditional salmon and sea trout flies will work, however below is a list of recommended flies for Canadian salmon and steelhead.

  • Bunny Fly
  • Egg Sucking Leech
  • Flash Fly
  • Egg Fly
  • Zonker Minnow
  • Pink Wog

The list is endless and these flies are simply a guide. We suggest that you bring your usual fly box as well.
