A Flurry of Triggers, Monster Yellowfin and Wahoo in Alphonse!

The third week of the season has just finished on Alphonse and the team of eight rods had pleasant fishing conditions which allowed them to concentrate the first part of the week on the incredible numbers of large bonefish that St Francois has to offer.  As the week progressed and the rods got their eye in and the casts got more accurate they turned their attention towards the bigger and less amenable species.

The trigger fishing was about as good as it gets with 12 landed for the week which included a couple of monster yellow margins.  One rod managed to land 4 triggerfish on his first day on the flats in one session, which is a huge achievement.

Unfortunately the milkfish appeared to be spread out over the flats and not feeding in any quantity, so sadly there were none landed this week.

There were a fair number of GT’s to be seen, hooked and landed after lots of fights and lost flies.  The first one to be landed measured 90cm and was the rods first ever GT.

Permit was round in really good numbers but as always with these fickle fish, five were hooked momentarily before the fly was crunched and pulled out!  However the second rod of the season to land a permit enticed a beautiful 9lb fish to his fly.

A sight to behold was the incredible numbers of big yellowfin tuna and wahoo that are currently following the annual migration of red swimming crab.  There was plenty of action which was instant and aggressive at times whenever your cast hit the water.  The new dive instructor, Hinton Faram, landed his first ever wahoo which was a monster weighing it at 18kg.  An impressive 26kg yellowfin was landed by one of the rods which rounded off a great week of fishing.
