7 to 14 January: Weekly report from Tierra del Fuego

The season has begun on The Rio Grande in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. The head guide at Estancia Maria Behety, Federico Molinolo,  reports from last week on the river...

The total amount of fish landed was 136 at Estancia Maria Behety lodge, of which 43 were over 15lbs and three sea-trout over 20lbs.  The average weight of fish landed was 12lbs. There was a very nice group at the lodge and all were very good fishermen.

Top rod for the week was David with 31 fish to his net, the largest of which was 19lbs. Jim and Gordon landed the biggest two fish of the week at 22lbs each.

Fly lines (tips, heads, lengths, densities, etc.): Skagit heads with different lengths of T-14 and T-11. Scandi lines with poly-leaders worked as well.

Floating and internediate tips started working better; we had a lot of raises stripping tubes on the surface. The biggest fish was 17lbs and others from 10 to 14lbs.

Leaders: 7 to 12 feet, 12 to 15lbs.

The most successful way of catching sea trout this week was dead drifting nymphs and in the dirty water stripping tubes with sinking lines. Most of the fish landed were in the lower and middle parts of the river, the upper part is very low with not too mnay fish.

STATISTICS FOR ESTANCIA MARIA BEHETY:
Rods per week: 6
Total number of fish landed: 136
Weight of the biggest fish: 22lbs
Number of fish landed over 15lbs: 43
Number of fish landed over 20lbs: 3
Notable catches: 6 of the 6 rods landed a sea trout to 19lbs and had lots of double hooks.

There is still some last minute availability for this season. For more information please contact either Charlie White or Hannah Treliving.
