14 to 21 January: Weekly report from Tierra del Fuego
By Hannah Treliving
This week saw Alf B return to The Rio Grande with his usual group of fellow rods to celebrate his 90th birthday. Remarkably, Alf has been fishing the river for the last 25 years and celebrated his milestone birthday with a 23lber...
Last winter it did not snow much so all the rivers in Tierra del Fuego are low. The Rio Grande is low for this time of the season, but excellent for fishing. Unlike other years the fish have started to run up river in big numbers earlier, so it is full of fresh fish.
ESTANCIA MARIA BEHETY:
The river is low. Water is very clear.
45°F to 59°F
The river stayed at the same level all the week - low.
Wind speed ranges through the week: 5 to 30 MPH. On Tuesday it went up to 50 MPH.
41°F to 75°F
Flies that are working the best: Mostly nymphs: EMB, Prince Nymph, Aurelia Prince, Beauty Camila, Red Butt, and Anadromizer. Yuk Bug and Wooly buggers also worked well. Big flies for the last session of the day like intruders, leeches and big tube flies.

As mentioned, the rods netted a total of 118 fish with 45 fish over 15 lbs and 5 over 20 lbs. The weight average of fish landed was an incredible 13.91 lbs.
Top rod of the week was Roger Y with 33 fish to the net, the biggest of which was 22 lbs. Roger now has over 100 fish in the records book at La Villa since he first started fishing here.
Alf B, Colin G and Roger C landed the biggest fish at 23 lbs.
The river did not change, we had little rain and relatively calm winds
7 - 14 °C (44 - 57 Fahrenheit)
Again, the river is very low for this time of the year.
We didn’t have strong winds this week, only on Tuesday morning did the wind speed reach 100 Kilometers (62 mph). On some afternoons the wind changed direction to the east, which made the fishing more difficult.
6 - 22 °C (43 - 72 Fahrenheit)
We experienced one night of heavy rain and the river didn't rise.
Flies that are working the best: Nymphs: EMB’s Wonder Bug, Aurelia Prince, Prince Nymph, Green Machines and rubber legs nymphs. Different sizes of Sunray Shadows also worked well. Big flies for the last hour: Leeches, and big tube flies did the trick. The Green Machine was the best fly of the week.
