The tiger fish is iconic to Africa and represents everything about the continent that has drawn travellers there for centuries. It is a wild, ferocious, harsh and beautiful fish that offers superb sport on a fly or spinner.
Much like the dorado of Argentina, the tiger is an ambush predator and will eat anything and everything that it can find. Casting to structure such as dead trees and stripping your fly back can lead to arm wrenching takes and vicious pulls. Once hooked they will jump immediately and show you their awe inspiring teeth as they try to rattle the fly free.
A big river tiger is 20lbs but realistically anything over 15lbs is unlikely to be landed on a fly as they are so brutal. Given that they inhabit rivers that flow through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world; this wonderful fish should be high on everyone’s hit list.
