Hitara, Iceland

The Hitara is situated in the west of Iceland and is only an hour and a half drive from downtown Reykjavik. The river extends to approximately 29km but the main six rod lodge fishes the middle to lower section of the river which is the most productive part of the river.

While the lower part of the Hitara is more open and with wider pools, as you go upstream so the water becomes more intimate. Bruafoss is an impressive fall just above the lodge and the pools are impressive with some interesting rocky scenery as you go further up the river.

The Hitara is typically Icelandic with clear water and is therefore ideal for fishing hitched flies. Floating lines are the norm and with the pools being relatively intimate, you would ideally be using a single handed rod or occasionally a small switch rod. Small flies tend to be the order of the day.

Since 2018 the owners have done much to try to improve the fishing by restocking using brood stock from the Hitara itself. Over 700 fish were caught in the 2022 season which has been the best season for some years.

The lodge itself, named Lundur, overlooks one of the most productive pools on the river and it is not uncommon to witness someone playing a salmon. Each rod has their own bedroom with ensuite bathroom and as with many Icelandic fishing lodges, the food is extremely good.
