Lakselva has fished as well as ever this season, with strong runs of large fish continuing well into August. In addition there has been a significantly larger run of plump grilse this year.
The party of six rods fishing 8- 15 August finished with 27 fish for their week. They landed 15 salmon with an average weight of 23.6lbs as well as 10 grilse. They also had a couple of sea trout, including a lovely fish of 7lbs on a dry fly Bomber.
Gareth Craze had a huge salmon of 48.5lbs on 11 August, from exactly the same pool and same date that Brian Anderson had a fish of 46lbs last year. Two other fish of 30lbs were landed, both by Brian Anderson. Only four of the 15 salmon were below 20lbs. The average weight for the salmon for this week was almost identical to previous years and the river continues to show remarkable consistency.
The weather changed dramatically on Sunday 15 August and the arriving party faced a strong North wind, rain and hail. Despite the inclement conditions which continued for the first half of the week they finished with a good haul of 36 salmon and grilse. Two salmon of 30lbs were landed, a notable event for CB who had fish of 30lbs and 28lbs on the same day.
There was a very good run of 2SW fish in the 10lbs to 18lbs bracket – great to see them but they depressed the average weight a bit to 18.2lbs! The grilse poured in and 19 were caught. Another great year on Lakselva and very encouraging to see a good run of grilse and 2SW salmon – we are looking forward to meeting their larger brethren next year!
