La Villa de Maria Behety Lodge Week 3 Report, 2020

La Villa de Maria Behety Lodge Week 3 Report, 2020

Another week on the Rio Grande down and the fishing was very good with river levels still ideal. On Wednesday the river came up and got a little dirty. Fishing was rewarding when using very big flies or 2 tubes in tandem. At VMB 98 fish were landed, 20 fish over 15 lbs, 2 over 20. Average weight 10 lbs.

Johann B was top rod of the week with 24 fish landed.
Gunar N landed the biggest fish 22 lbs.

Floating lines and slow sinking worked the best, salmon flies size 10 and 12 were the best flies for the week. There were many offers on top, using salmon flies; green machine and sunray shadow.

Water Conditions:
Water colour and visibility: Very clear water until Thursday, then it got dirty below the Ona river. The upper river was very clean all week.
Water temperature: 9° - 14° Celsius
Water level: great level below the Menéndez River. The upper sections of the Rio Grande were at a good level but not high.

Weather Conditions:
Wind speed: The wind blew northwest and it wasn’t too strong all week. Only on Friday afternoon did the wind get up really strong.
Air temperature ranges through the week: 4° - 16° Celsius.
Weather observations: Two very cold days.

Fishing Conditions
Flies that worked best:  In the clean water salmon flies and tube flies were very productive. In the dirty water intruders, leeches and 2 tubes in tandem. Big flies for the last hour: big long tube flies.

After the lower beats of the river rose, the fishing got much better in dirty water than in the clear water.
Fly lines (tips, heads, lengths, densities): Skagit heads with different lengths of T-17,T-14, and T-11. Floating lines were still best.
Length and strength of tippet and leaders: 7 to 14 feet, 12 to 20 lbs.

Dead drifting salmon and tubes flies was the best technique. Also stripping the fly helped induce a take. Most of the fish landed were in the lower and middle part of the river. All fish were again fresh.

Fish Catch Statistics:
Number of anglers for the week: 6.
Total number of fish landed for the week: 98.
Weight of the biggest fish landed for the week: 22 lbs.
Number of fish landed over 15 lbs: 20.
Number of fish landed over 20 lbs: 2
