It was so good to be back on the Rio Grande after two years. I managed 29 fish, six of which were in the ‘book’ - 15lbs or more. The elusive No Blank Club, where you need to catch a fish in every session, eluded me by one zone which produced a 2lb sea trout. Only fish of 3lb or more are counted!
The week was excellent with an incredible wind on the first day of 110km/hr. The windiest for several years. Things calmed down after that with a more ‘normal’ gusting of up to 80 km/hr. The wind was mostly off our backs so casting was not impacted greatly.
The fish are as fresh as ever and the quality is no less than my first visit ten years ago. The variety of techniques and the technical challenge is what draws me back each year. One pool requires a light Scandi/Sunray set up another a small nymph, some with streamers and others with big leeches on a variety of T-lines from T11 to T18.
The whole package is better than anywhere I’ve been. The food, staff and guides are all superb. Roll on next year.
