Fishing

Los Roques, Week 1

by Charlie White

I have been looking forward to getting back to Los Roques for some time but I had forgotten how good it really can be.

We have just finished our first week of our extended hosted trip (I will be out here for 5 weeks) and we have had a superb time.

A last minute change meant that just four guests were here to experience everything that Los Roques has to offer and what an offering it is.

Two guests had never fished in saltwater before whilst two have fished quite literally everywhere – what is astounding about here is that all four had the most fantastic week.

From hooking and landing your first bonefish from a school to targeting trigger fish and permit on the flats – everything is available here.

We have landed hundreds of bonefish between us, jumped and landed tarpon, spied several permit and bashed barracuda until our arms hurt – it is non stop, tiring and fantastic fun.

The lodge is so welcoming that it really does feel like home and the staff simply cannot do enough for you.

We have been fed likes kings and have done significant damage to the wine stores of the island – lucky that today is resupply day!

There is tackle provided so you don’t have to buy lots of new kit to try saltwater fishing and if you have your own, you should use it here – there are very few places like it.

There will be seven of us next week and all things are set fair for another extraordinary amount of fun – as one client said last night – “what a privilege to be able to see this”
