Spring salmon fishing does not get better than this

by Roxtons

As always we commence with high, cold water and at first sight the river looks daunting, however with the water so cold, the salmon tend to hug the easier flows on the sides and it can be wonderfully productive fishing.

This week, our second, the water level has started its customary steady drop and the temperature is up to the range of 8°C – 9°C. Intermediate tips are coming into play. Summer conditions are yet to come although there are hints of it as the grass starts to green up – and it will not be until 1st June or shortly after that we will start experimenting with floating lines to see if we can make the change to summer style salmon fishing.

For those who like spring salmon fishing there really is no better place than the Varzuga. The facts speak for themselves. We would expect most fishers to catch 30 to 50 salmon for their week, sometimes conditions come together really well and we do even better than that. Yesterday at the Lower Camp they had a cracking day with 10 rods landing 124 fresh, silver spring salmon. Our daily blog from the river is at www.varzuga.com where you can watch the catches unfold from this remarkable river.
