The season begins in Tierra del Fuego

The season has begun on The Rio Grande in Tierra del Fuego. Head Guide from La Villa Maria Behety, Federico Zimmermann, reports from the river...

Happy new year to everyone! We are very happy to start a new season at La Villa de Maria Behety. We are proud to announce the addition of Guido Perillo to the team of guides. Guido is young but experienced, and has an impressive background in fly fishing and guiding. He guided in the Bolivian jungle for Dorado for 3 years, in Santa Cruz, Patagonia for big Rainbows, and in the upper Rio Grande.

We had 7 guests this week, Amanda H and Jukka H from Finland, in their first fly fishing experience, Alan F from the USA, who learned how to cast a two handed rod; and our old friends, Alejandro A, Ronnie B, Alec S and Horacio P, all from from Argentina.

Despite the fact that the river is in great shape our first week, we feel that the fish are not in the system in big number, so far. The good news is that towards the end of the week we saw more action, meaning that new fish are returning to the river.

Alejandro A from Argentina was the top rod with 3 fish, he also landed the biggest, a fresh 12 lbs female.

The average weight was 7.57 lbs, the average catch a day per angler was 0.16 fish.
Water Conditions:
The water was clear with a peaty tint.
Water temperature: Between 10⁰ and 15⁰ Celsius (50⁰F – 53.6⁰F).

Water and River Condtions: Water level normal for this time of year. The level decrease was little and constant during the week.

Weather Conditions: Wind speed ranges: 15 to 60 kilometers per hour (9 – 37 mph).

Air temperature ranges: 8 and 18 degrees Celsius (46⁰ - 64⁰ F).
Weather observations: Mostly sunny, partial cloud cover.
Fishing Conditions:
Flies that are working the best are the EMB Rubber-legs, Wonder Bug, Green Machine, Sun Ray Shadow.

Fly lines: Skagits and scandis with tips such as floating, intermediate, type 3, 6 and 8. T-14 and Mow tips in various lengths.

Length and strength of tippet and leaders: 12 to 15lbs tippet, lengths between 4 and 14 feet.

Fish catch statistics:
Number of anglers for the week: 7
Total number of fish landed for the week: 7
Weight of the biggest fish landed for the week: 12 lbs

Meanwhile, there were 6 rods staying at Estancia Maria Behety where Federico Molinolo is Head Guide again for the season...

Water colour and visibility: Very clear, 5 to 6 feet of visibility
Water temperature: Between 43°F and 54°F
Water levels: The river is low and dropping a little every day.
Weather Conditions:
Wind speed ranges: It was a windy week. We had a couple of very windy days (Wednesday and Tuesday). The wind blew up to 55-60 mph.

Air temperature: Between 40°F and 62°F

Weather observations: Mostly sunny

Fishing Conditions:
Flies: Big flies worked well this week for us. Leeches, tube flies, and buggers. Also nymphs at times, mostly EMB’s, Bitch Creeks

Fly lines: We fished Skagit heads with different lengths of T-14 and T-17. Mow tips are a great option

Tippet and leaders: 15 to 20 lbs test tippet. 5 to 10 feet long

Total number of fish landed for the week: 22 fish landed.
Average weight: 9.3 lbs
Biggest fish of the week: 22.5 lbs

Notable catches:  Ken F landed a 22.5 lbs male in Boca McLennan pool

Greenland – a trip report by Charlie White

By Umbraco.Core.Models.Membership.User

Arctic char fishing in Greenland has been on my radar for a long time but for various reasons I have never actually taken the plunge. That all changed last year when, on the way to host a group on the East Ranga in Iceland, I spoke to Valgerdur Arnardottir (Arni Baldursson’s daughter) who had just come back from Greenland and was utterly raving about it.
