Tierra del Fuego report 8th – 15th March 2014

by Charlie White

There were cold, strong winds, some rain and fluctuating temperatures during the week but it turned out to be the best of the season so far in terms of numbers of fish caught and average size.

Water levels rose by about 15cms on Wednesday but it remained clear. At La Villa, 50% more fish were caught than the week before, with an average weight of 9.8lbs. 36 sea trout were over the 15lsb mark and 12 of those were over 20lbs. Gareth B caught two of the biggest fish of the week (at 23lbs )and Robbie DB landed a spectacular 62 overall so set an all-time record for La Villa Maria Behety – our congratulations go to them both.

With regard to flies, as the water remained fairly clear the usual nymphs were chosen during the day. Green Machines fished deep worked well while big streamers and tubes were best during the windy days when the water turned cloudy.

At Estancia Maria Behety, the average weight of fish landed was 8.8lbs. 27 of those fish were over the 15lbs mark and four were over 20lbs. The largest catch of the week at this lodge was 22lbs.

There is still some last minute availability at both lodges for the end of the season. If it is of interest please do not hesitate to contact either Charlie White or Hannah Treliving.
