Shooting

An overseas shooting report

by Roxtons

The fabulous shooting in the Southern Hemisphere allows the discerning shot to be able to shoot somewhere in the world at pretty much any time of the year

Our horizons have broadened and last year we had our first shooting party to visit New Zealand in May for some wild duck and driven pheasants. The group had a wonderful time and are looking to return. Our shooting program in Southern Africa went very well with some excellent and challenging sport with wild birds galore and an astounding amount of variety. Next year we are looking to develop our bird shooting in East Africa and in particular Kenya which has a great array of shooting. This can be incorporated into longer more assorted itineraries for groups and family groups alike with plenty of activities to ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy and do.

Argentina is as popular as ever and our parties this year have really appreciated the attention to detail and the constant improvements that the lodges are making to ensure that they provide the best possible service and accommodation as well as some of the best, high volume shooting to be had anywhere in the world.

Spain has also been superb this year with wonderful, weather, fabulous accommodation and some very testing and varied shooting. We are very lucky to have extremely good relationships with, what we think are, the best estates in Spain. This season also saw our first year working with Jesus Alberto Muela at Finca La Cuesta ( a “Finca” is a partirdge shooting estate) and our congratulations to him on the refurbishment of the lodge at La Cuesta, which has been very much appreciated and admired – almost as much as his very high partridges.

Ventosilla has provided excellent shooting with  traditional and exquisite accommodation in this most imposing of castles. The castle is full of hunting and shooting memorabilia of ‘Bunting’ – the Count of Teba, Duke of Santonia, one of the most famous shots Spain has ever seen and the grandfather of the present owners.

La Nava again has enjoyed a very good season with plenty of testing shooting matched by impecable service in the lodge, some epic scenery and delicious lunches out in the field.

The season for Spain runs from the 1st October – 28th February each year – though the early part of October can be very hot for both guns and partridges.

If you haven’t shot abroad – it should definitely be on the top ten sporting things to do!
