Shooting wild birds is always a special experience, and The Freestate in South Africa offers some of the best in the world. We are delighted to work with our trusted partners in South Africa to offer prime rock pigeon, upland game hunting and wildfowling.

Rock Pigeon

With easy overnight flights to Johannesburg from Heathrow and the lodge located some two hours from the airport, teams can be in the field shooting on the afternoon of arrival.

The agricultural area around Sasolburg is well known for producing large quantities of sunflower fields, which get hit hard by Rock Pigeon in numbers. The Rock Pigeon are very fast and acrobatic, providing superb sport. Prime time is March and April when the fields are becoming ripe for harvest. Teams of beaters are used to keep the pigeon moving and they even use drones to scout and move them off nearby fields.

The sport can be intense, and the sheer variety of shooting keeps it interesting, with everything from long grouse-like crossers, to high birds arriving on the flight lines and fast curling birds moving from shot. Many clients comment on how difficult the shooting is.

A Typical Day

The flight times vary throughout the season and subject to the conditions, but typically we have an early departure from the lodge after breakfast, and a 30 to 60 minute drive to the fields where the flight lines have been scouted. On arrival, your stations will be set up for you in the fields ready to go with drinks, gun, cartridges ready and often shooting over a pigeon magnet to help draw in the birds. Subject to the flight, we shoot until we break for a simple field lunch and continue into the afternoon, before stopping for sundowners in the late afternoon. Occasionally, subject to flight times, we might shoot through with a simple lunch brought to you in the field, to make the most of the best sport in the prime time.

Itineraries can be tailored but our recommendation for for Rock pigeon would be x2 half days and two full days shooting, with three nights in the lodge.

Upland & Waterfowl Game – 1^st May to 15^th September

From 1^st May the Upland game season starts, and Glen Guinea Lodge is surrounded by perfect habitat for wild bird hunting over well trained German Kurzhaar pointers and experienced dog handlers.  You will be targeting quail, francolin, spur fowl and guinea fowl. There is something very special about walking through a point on wild quarry, the dog has done his job, and the pressure is back on you, to take that quick shot at a bird flushing nearby and quartering away at speed. Days typically start with an early morning wild duck and goose flight, followed by a light brunch and then going on to the Upland game hunting. In early May, we can mix this in with volume Rock pigeon shooting and the first two weeks of May are prime to cover both pigeon and upland game. Driven guinea fowl days can also be arranged. Due to the variety of sport on offer with the Upland game, we recommend two half days and three full days shooting, with 4 nights. For the Upland game there is a bag limit of 10 duck/geese per person per day and 10 Upland birds per person per day. This is a lot of shooting on wild sustainably managed quarry.

We can arrange onward itineraries for plains game hunting in Limpopo, luxury game viewing reserves and even game fishing in Mozambique, which is a fabulous combination.

Accommodation

Glen Guinea Lodge has just completed a full renovation and extension offering exclusive use accommodation with 10 ensuite double bedrooms. The lodge is set in a beautiful location, with expansive views over farmland and open plains to the East, where you will likely see plains game grazing.  They have a firepit boma for evening after dinner drinks with friendly and attentive staff, good food and a fun and informal atmosphere.
