Sela, Iceland

The Sela has, until recent years, been the reserve of the privileged few. A truly awe-inspiring river located in the east, just north of Vopnafjordur, the Sela is now renowned as one of the best salmon rivers in Iceland.

The Sela is situated in an area of outstanding beauty and impressive terrain, which contributes to the diversity of fly water and fishable pools on offer.

The fishing on the Sela is strictly fly only, catch and release. There is also a daily limit of 10 fish per rod. In places the fishing is not easily accessed but ropes and rails are in place to help.

The fishing is varied throughout the river with deep canyon sections that offer very visual fishing to fast drawing pools with plenty of underwater structure. As with many Icelandic salmon rivers, the well-known pools are fished almost exclusively, however there are enough runs and pools to keep any salmon fisherman busy far beyond the days he has booked.

The Sela offers some of the most interesting and varied fly water of any river in Iceland. With dramatic scenery, spectacular waterfalls and a reliable run of strong fighting fish, it is a privilege to fish this amazing river.

Accommodation

The lodge on the Sela is ultra modern. Sitting to the south of the river, overlooking the main foss this is probably the smartest lodge in Iceland

The cuisine is absolutely superb and served in a cosy dining room overlooking the river. The rooms are very comfortable and the whole lodge gives off a feeling of tradition and a unique atmosphere preserved by the photographs on the wall and the relative exclusivity this river has enjoyed over the years.
