“I had a brilliant week! Wally picked me up from Terrace airport and took me to the Spey lodge where the accommodation is excellent, my room was very comfortable. I really like the new veranda that Wally has built, great views, and a lovely place to relax. The food at the lodge was excellent, Molly is a fantastic cook, and the evening meals were delicious, with a chance to chat about the events of the day and what the plans were for the following day, all with a good glass of wine!
Dan, my fishing guide was brilliant and took me to different fishing locations each day by jet boat on both the upper and lower Skeena, and drift boat on the upper and then the lower Kitimat. These are both beautiful rivers, and Dan explained to me where the different salmon would lie in the river flow, and he set up the rods with both Skagit and Scandi lines with the optimum weighted tips and barbless fly, depending on what species of salmon we were fishing for.
There were pink salmon, sockeye, dolly varden, chinook, chum, steelhead. I caught and released my first ever chinook, at 20 lbs. I think both Dan and me were both praying that I would not loose it, as it went on another reel screaming run. On another day a 16lb chum. I even caught 2 sockeye on the swing, 4 dolly varden, and over the five days 70 pink salmon to 8 lbs. I probably lost about another 100. It was amazing to see the number of salmon swim past, about 4 foot from the bank in 18 inches of rippling water, I think they were mainly pinks that I saw.
The weather was great, cloudy, sunny, no rain during the week, water levels ok, the scenery breath-taking! The temperature ranged from 20 to 28 degrees.
I will definitely return to Spey lodge.”
