It is hard to write a “new” report on a hosted trip when in truth, I could essentially cut and paste last year’s report with a few, very minor, adjustments.

The reliability of the West Ranga and the entire operation around it are what makes it such an appealing prospect, from a client’s point of view but also from that of a host.

Hosting a trip where the fishing is poor, the food is not great, and the guides are moderate is seriously not fun – it feels very pressured and you just want the best for your guests.

Hosting a trip where the fishing is superb, the logistics seamless, the food is spectacular and every single guide is a rockstar, makes for a very happy time for everyone.

Our four days on the West Ranga was very much in the latter category, and it was just wonderful to see so many contented and thrilled clients come back to the lodge at the end of every session.

We landed 246 salmon over the 8 sessions, and we also seemed to lose just as many.  As ever, there were theories about that, but it was probably just that the river was a touch colder than we might hope for – it still led to a huge amount of action.

It is a big group and it takes everyone on the ground and back here in the office to pull it together, but it worked beautifully and we all had a huge amount of fun.

Salmon fishing is increasingly hard to get “right” – the West Ranga is as consistent as they come and is rightly the number one river in Iceland at the moment.
