Laxa in Asum, Iceland

One of the most remarkable Atlantic salmon rivers in the world

The Laxa in Asum is arguably the best salmon river in Iceland. It is renowned for producing one of the highest average numbers of salmon per rod per day. It is not a huge river so can be very comfortably fished with a single handed rod, which only makes the fishing even more exciting.

The river originates in Lake Laxarvatn and a hot spring at the top of the river raises the temperature throughout which means that all of the fishing is done with a floating line with skated flies being one of the best methods for fishing this stunning river.

Fished by just four rods, the river is amongst the most sought after in Iceland. In many years the total catch to the four rods is in excess of 1,000 salmon a season. The river is totally exclusive and the preserve of the very fortunate. The fishing extends to 15km of water with most pools being easily accessible. The catch is largely made up of the huge run of grilse that start to enter the river in mid July and continues to the end of August.

The Laxa in Asum is perfect for those that enjoy single handed rods, floating lines, small flies and the surface action of this clear water river. A switch rod of 11-12 ft can be useful on a couple of the larger pools.

The lodge was built in 2012 and extended in 2017 and comprises six ensuite guest rooms, a spacious dining and living room. There are good facilities for storing waders and fishing gear. The lodge is very exclusive with refined service and excellent cuisine.
