Stora Laxa, Iceland
Stora Laxa, near the town of Hreppum, is located in the southern part of Iceland only 90 minutes from the airport. The river spans over 90km where it runs from Lake Grænavatn through the gorgeous and scenic canyons Laxárgljúfur before opening up on to the meadows and joining the glacier river Hvítá.
Stora Laxa has over 60 marked pools over three beats for six rods. These pools vary from fast rocky pools and canyons with dramatic rock formations and then further downstream the river opens up to more meadow-like pools but still with impressive geography in the distance. The lower Stora Laxa is the mostly easily accessible and will suit fishers of all ages.
The most productive pools on the Stora Laxa are on the lower beat and the river is known for its multi sea winter salmon as well as strong runs of grilse. Stora Laxa is indeed an impressive river with steep cliffs and rock faces beside the pools on the river.
