“A Brilliant Time” at Boundary Lodge, Canada

by Roxtons

We are delighted to share this testimonial we received from our client following their recent fishing trip to Boundary Lodge in Canada:

“I had a brilliant time fishing at Boundary with Wally and the team.  7 full days of fishing and 2 half days were excellent value. This was my first time fishing at Boundary, and I was lucky enough to be offered a cancellation by Wally a month before, it took me about 3 seconds to make the decision to go, since catching a steelhead on the swing is something I have always wanted to do.  I took 2 spey rods with me on the trip.

The river was in good condition, on the first night when we arrived we walked the 50 yards from the lodge to the home pool and with the aid of a torch saw about 10 chrome steelhead . So I thought that I stood a good chance of landing my first steelhead on the swing during that week.

I must mention the food, I mean the quality, the perfection, every lunchtime and dinner was something to look forward to. The guiding by Wally , Alex and Josh was first class, their knowledge, enthusiasm was greatly appreciated.

I had a selection of flies, but I used the ones that they had , since they of course knew what had the best chance of success. I used two of my own rods, one set up with a skagit with 8ft ot t3, and the other  with a scandi line 35ft head with 15ft of t6, tippet 12 lb. Both rods 13ft 6 weight  8/9. I used the skagit t3 95% of the time, for the river level with a slightly weighted fly it fished at the right  depth, anything heavier would have snagged on the rocks half way through the swing, and all the fish I made contact with were at the end of the swing or the last 30 percent of the swing so t3 did what was required.  I landed 1 steelhead a day on average, lost one on average, and also had 1 or 2 bull trout.

The Steelhead averaged about 9 lb, but I also had them at 12,13 and 17 lb . For me, this was unbelievable, I would have been happy with just one.

The weather was changeable, but conditions were good for steelhead, so for me. I wore plenty of layers with a good waterproof jacket. The wading was reasonably easy, there were a few runs, if you felt up to it that entailed wading to waist level, but the wading was still OK, and 90% of the runs the wading was ankle to knee deep on an easy surface. There were 4 other people in the lodge with me that week and they were great company loved their steelhead fishing.

For Simon, it was his 18th time at boundary.  For me, I have already asked Wally to book me in for next year”.
