La Villa de Maria Behety Lodge Week 4 Report, 2020

by Charlie White

Despite near perfect river levels it was a slower week and the fish really did not seem to be as aggressive. Despite being slower the good water allowed 78 fish to be landed, 15 fish over 15 lbs, 2 over 20 lbs, with an average weight of 9.5 lbs. Roger Y was top rod of the week with 18 fish landed. Keith C landed the biggest fish at 20 lbs. Sinking lines worked best with EMB and some action on the surface with the Green Machine.

Water Conditions:
Water colour and visibility: The water was clean and clear all week.
Water temperature: 9° – 14° C
Water level: Great water levels below the Menéndez River, upper part starting to get a little low.

Weather Conditions:
Wind speed ranges through the week: The wind blew  from the northwest, but it wasn’t particularly strong all week.
Air temperature through the week: 7° – 18° Celsius

Weather observations: The afternoons were generally cold which certainly effected fishing.

Fishing Conditions:
Flies that are working the best: Emb, green machine and the sunray shadow. Big flies for the last hour: big tube flies,  and big bushy leeches.

Fly lines (tips, heads, lengths, densities, etc.): Skagit heads with different lengths of T-17, T-14, T-11. Floating and intermediate lines were also good at times.

Length and strength of tippet and leaders: 7 to 14 feet, 12 to 20 pounds.

Dead drifting Emb and green machine was productive, stripping sunray shadows also worked well.
Most of the fish were in the lower and middle part of the river, upper part is fishing better each week.
All fish were fresh.
