TDF Fishing Report for La Villa de Maria Behety and Estancia Maria Behety Lodge 23rd February to 2nd March 2019

by Jack Selby

The fishing was very good this week on the Rio Grande, with a great quality of fish. La Villa de Maria Behety saw 120 fish landed, 42 fish over 15 pounds, 10 over 20, Average weight  12  pounds, the best average for the season so far.

At Estancia Mariah Behety lodge landed 156 fish with 40 over 15 pounds and 5 over 20 pounds. A great week and a fun and experienced team.

They were using very small nymphs tied on circle hooks, and the fish hooked themselves with aggressive takes. The flies were always in the scissors, meaning we lost very few fish for the week. All the fish were caught on the swing with a sink tip and floating lines and flies.

Top rod of the week was Michael G with 30 fish to the net, the biggest 24 pounds at Villa Maria Behety and Mike B at Estancia Maria Behety with 21 fish landed.

The river was in excellent condition; low and clear and running between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius. The wind was not quite as harsh but still found time to gust to 50 kmph. The air was between -5 and 15 degrees Celsius during the week.

Flies that worked were small weighted nymphs on strong hooks. EMBs, Wonderbug and Rubber legs. Sunray shadows and green machines in the surface. As ever the large intruders and leeches worked well in the last hour before dark. Both Scandi and Skagits worked well with T-14 and T-11 tips or polyleaders. Long leaders of 15 to 20 pounds were required for the low clear water. The fish are in the middle and upper pool mostly but not many fresh fish in the upper pools.
