Three returning clients and three new clients fished from La Villa Maria Behety last week for what was the best week of the season to date. Every one of the six rods caught a 20lb or bigger fish and the weather was fantastic with no wind and mild temperatures. Although there was some rain the river level and water clarity were unaffected, and water temperatures ranged from between 9˚C (48˚F) and 16˚C (61˚F).
The average size of sea trout landed this week was 9 ¾ lbs and a total of 42 fish were over 15lbs of which 10 of those were 20lbs or larger.
Techniques:Fish were caught on floating lines on almost every pool that was fished. Colie Dogs, Monkeys, Sunray Shadows and small flies such as Black Pennell offered superb surface sport. The largest fish caught on the surface from La Villa was landed this week– a fresh 20lb hen on a skated Black Pennell – congratulations Peter A!
The classic Aurelia Prince, EMB, TDF Prince, and other small nymphs worked well during the day but in the evening, the rods found that big leeches and tube flies ruled. In some pools the key was to go really deep; fifteen feet of T14 and T17 were a must to connect with the fish.
Catch of the Week: a 23lb fish caught by Philip D who also finished the week without a single blank session – a first for the season. ‘This was without doubt the best week of fishing I have ever experienced’ he said, ‘made even more enjoyable by the excellent staff and guides.’
Top Rods:Our congratulations to Philip D with 34 fish to the net.
James H also had a great week, landing 31 fish – his best ever on the Rio Grande!
There are no more rods left this year but if you are interested in next year then please contact Charlie White at the office as soon as possible as demand for next season is already extremely strong.
