Why Tierra del Fuego is the ultimate destination

by Roxtons

“Having been fortunate enough to travel to some amazing destinations to feed my desire for fly-fishing, I have found the Rio Grande in Tierra del Fuego to be the ultimate.

I have fished for Atlantic salmon in Norway and Russia, for steelhead in British Columbia and bonefish, permit and tarpon in a variety of destinations in the Caribbean. All are special places and the excitement of catching these fish is truly wonderful. Some years ago I ventured to Tierra del Fuego to seek big sea trout and have never looked back; The Rio Grande is about as perfect a destination as you can find.

If you were going to invest in a trip of a lifetime then I would greatly encourage you to try for these fish. What ticks all of the boxes, however, is the all-round experience. Not only is the fishing superb – I have caught ninety fish in four visits up to 24lb – but the accommodation that Roxtons offers on the two estancia lodges are world-class. The staff offer the highest level of service and great company. The guiding is the best I have experienced with guides that know the water intimately and are enjoyable company. The fishing is consistent. It is challenging and sometimes technical but this is what I enjoy. You will often hear about the wind but this is often used to your advantage. The scenery is something else with amazing sunsets along with the wildlife of guanacos, beavers, foxes and the condors drifting over from the Andes. Most people return every year as they too have fallen for this place. As long as I can walk and hold a double-hander I will be going back!”
