On 10th July 2025, the UK Government confirmed that the use of lead ammunition for game shooting will be phased out across England, Scotland, and Wales.
The move is part of a wider effort to protect wildlife, improve environmental health, and ensure safer food standards in the countryside.
What happens next!
- By summer 2026: Government will formally introduce the lead-ammo restrictions into law.
- 2026-2029: Transition period for users and manufacturers to switch.
- From 2029: Using or selling disallowed lead ammunition becomes illegal – except for the listed exemptions.
Exemptions
A limited number of exemptions will apply, including:
- Small calibre rifles and airguns
- Regulated target ranges with appropriate lead recovery systems
