Partridges at Prescombe: Roxtons Roving Syndicate

by Roxtons

In September, under glorious sunshine, we hosted our most recent Roving Syndicate days at one of the country’s premier partridge shoots in Prescombe, Wiltshire.

Prescombe is situated in the stunning Ebbesbourne Valley in the heart of the Wiltshire Downs, conveniently located within an hour of Heathrow and 1 1/2hr from London. Spanning over 3000 acres, the estate offers exceptional topography, making the most of deep valleys, rolling hills and surrounding woodland to create over 30 challenging drives. Combined with the friendly and expert guidance of Steve Thomas, this makes Prescombe one of the best partridge and pheasant shoots in the country.

Our guns were given a warm welcome at the charming shoot lodge, getting a chance to meet each other before heading out on the first drive. Roving Syndicate days are ideal for individual or small groups of guns who are looking for an occasional day’s shooting, at some of the best shoots in the country, without the hassle of organising a full line. They are also highly sociable events, offering a way to welcome new faces to the shooting world and fostering many lasting friendships.

The morning featured exhilarating shooting over the steep banked valleys of Bogett’s wood and Jimmy’s making for high, challenging partridges. Elevenses followed in the sunshine, with top-class hospitality including chilled drinks, warming consommé, pheasant goujons and a tempting arrange of other delicious snacks prepared by Steve’s fantastic team to fuel the guns through to lunch.

It was a chauffeur service to the next drive in the gunbus as the team headed deeper into the valleys. At one point, the line gained attention from some curious cows, who were unbothered by the sound of guns and happily stopped to watch the action unfold. The day finished on a spectacular final drive at Mandry’s with many smiling faces as we headed back to the lodge for a well-earned roast for lunch.
