The 2024 Grouse Season Prospects

by Philip Wolstenholme

With the vast majority of grouse counts now complete it is clear that the numbers are significantly down on what was hoped for, or even what was expected in line with the spring counts.

It is thought that the poor numbers is largely due to the mild, wet, winter, followed by a wet, cold, spring and early summer – some higher moors had snowfall in early June! Sadly this combination has meant poor breeding conditions for the grouse, yet relatively favourable conditions for their nemesis’s, such as worm and tick.

However, it is not all doom and gloom. Some areas are reporting a shootable stock of birds, largely moors which are slightly lower and situated on the eastern side of the UK. One can only assume that they missed the worst of the awful weather that higher areas have had to contend with.

There are a few who are yet to conduct their counts and let’s hope that they have positive news. In the meantime, spare a though and give some thanks to those who have worked tirelessly on the hill through the winter, spring, and summer. It is thanks to them that numbers have a fighting chance in future seasons.

Despite the news above, there are still plenty of exciting and varied shooting opportunities for the forthcoming season and please do click on the links below to see what we have available on a single gun basis and on a full team basis. If there is not something amongst the days listed, please do call as we would be delighted to help find something to suit you and your fellow Guns.
